Dear Families,
Welcome to a new school year at Violet Elementary! With your support I am looking forward to a wonderful and successful year of learning with your first grader.
This will be my ninth year with the Lake Shore district and my sixth year in 1st grade. I previously taught in kindergarten. I have also taught preschool and 4th and 5th grades before becoming part of the Lake Shore family. I received my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at Wayne State University and my Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education through Saginaw Valley State University.
When I am not teaching I enjoy friends, travel. sports and spending time with my family. I am married to my wonderful husband Steve. Together we have six children five girls and one son. They range in age from 10 to 24. We also have a sixteen month old grandson.
My mission is to create a safe and enthusiastic learning environment for my students in which they will be treated with respect and understanding. I will work alongside with you, the parents, to encourage my class to always work to their highest potential and be good learners throughout life. It is important to me that all of my students believe in themselves and throughout their lives they will always remember to “reach for the stars.”
Please look on our class Weebly www.firstgrade-plotzkeweebly.com for classroom news. Also, there is additional information about first grade. There is also an app available for your smart phone. I do not send home hard copies of notes as we are trying to do our best to become a paperless community. If this is a problem, please let me know.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you ever have any questions or concerns. The easiest and quickest way for a response from me is by email. I look forward to meeting all of you throughout the year.
Folders will be sent home daily and are due back the following day. Please be sure to look over your child’s work and read all notes sent home in the folder. It is very important that these folders are sent back each day. Any correspondence that needs to be sent should go in these folders. Please check your child’s backpack daily.
*Every morning I will collect the folders for any notes from home, but I will not go into his/her folders or backpacks. Students are responsible for checking their folders/backpacks on their own. Please tell your child when you have placed a note or lunch money in his/her backpack so it can be given to me right away in the morning.
*When sending in lunch money please be sure it is in an envelope with your child’s name on it.
*I will also be doing communication through my website at www.firstgrade-plotzkeweebly.com. Please also be sure I have a current email and phone number throughout the school year in case I need to contact you.
Homework:
Students should always be reading and studying their math facts. As the math chapters come home you will be able to reinforce what has been worked on in school. More information will follow on math procedures with the first chapter that is sent home. Please check the website for further information.
*Unfinished class work-Any class work that is not finished during the school day will become homework for that night. Please try to finish it that night and send it in the next day. I do understand that evenings are busy, so if it is not possible to finish it that evening, please just write a note letting me know that it will be turned in the following day.
*Poetry Patch-Poetry Patch folders will be coming home every Friday. These are poems that were read together throughout the week as a class. Please have your child read and reread these over the weekend to an adult to help improve reading fluency. Please write the poems that were read in the reading log. Please be sure to initial and return complete folder on Monday. New poems will be added weekly to their Poetry Patch folder and at the end of the year will have a wonderful poetry folder to read over the summer!
Snack Time Procedures:
We will be enjoying a healthy mid-morning and afternoon snack every day. Each child is responsible for bringing their own snack to class. I ask that snack be non-messy (no pudding, jello, yogurt, etc.) and easy to eat. The snack should not replace a meal. One snack only, please!
Classroom Parties:
I will address class parties as they arise. Check the website for items we may need for specific parties or events. Special Schedules:
We are now on a 6 day rotating special schedule. What this means is that every day the student will have a different schedule for their special. There is a schedule for the specials in the front of the folder that comes home daily. There is also a schedule on the Violet website. Please pay close attention to information skills, this is library and the student should have their book returned or they will not be able to check a new one out. Also, please be sure to keep track of P.E. The student will need to wear tennis shoes on these days or if you have an extra set a pair can be kept in the locker.
Communication:
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me anytime!
*Email: [email protected] Email is probably the quickest and easiest way to contact me, as I check my email several times throughout the day.
*Phone: (586) 285-8722 leave a message. It is hard for me to respond in the same day (will probably be after school) however, I will receive the message if it is about dismissal or any other concerns.
*Send in a note. I will respond as soon as I can!
Class Guidelines:
Our class is structured in a cooperative learning setting. Our class is a “family of learners”. Just like families at home, we have good days and sometimes not so good days. But, families always love and care for each other. In our family of learners we will work cooperatively and together write a code of conduct. We will study and follow the Life Long Guidelines. The following guidelines, along with our 18 LIFE SKILLS, we will help create a peaceful, productive classroom.
Life Long Guidelines
Active Listening Trustworthiness Truthfulness NO Put Downs Personal Best
At Violet Elementary we are working together to be ALL -STAR STUDENTS! Please review the Life Skills, Life Long Guidelines, and All-Star key points with your child to help make this a great community for learning!
All-Star Students are always Safe, Trustworthy, AND Respectful.
We are safe when we show care and concern for other people and ourselves. We are trustworthy when we are truthful and we use our time and resources appropriately.
Respectful students take responsibility for their actions, accept others, and act with integrity.
By being ALL-STAR students, we create a comfortable learning environment where everyone can SHINE!
*******Library is every Tuesday and books are due that day. Thank you!
